Search results for “best locations for outdoor portraits” are rarely written for the West Midlands. Alexandra Cretu shoots on location from the Aza Photography studio in Netherton, Dudley, and these are the kinds of places that actually work for real sessions — not just for a single hero image at golden hour.
The right spot depends on the brief. A branding portrait in the Jewellery Quarter is a different job from a toddler-led family walk in a Dudley park. Share a postcode when you enquire so travel time and parking can be planned.
Birmingham: city texture without the crowds
Birmingham sessions often use a mix of architecture and green space. Canal paths, quieter streets in Edgbaston and Harborne, and parkland near Sutton Coldfield give softer light than a busy Bullring pavement at lunchtime. For personal branding, brick, steel, and water reflections read as “Birmingham” without needing a skyline selfie.
If you want greenery, ask for open shade under trees rather than full sun on a path. Midday in July is the hardest light; late afternoon from spring through autumn is kinder on faces. Winter sessions still work — coats, scarves, and shorter outdoor blocks with a café nearby.
Dudley and the Black Country
Dudley clients can start at the studio (135 Halesowen Rd, Netherton, Dudley DY2 9PY) and add an outdoor set nearby, or skip the studio entirely. Netherton, Stourbridge, Halesowen, and Brierley Hill all have parks, canals, and residential streets that photograph as home rather than as a tourist backdrop.
Family sessions do well where children can move: a path, a low wall, a bit of grass. Maternity portraits often need a quieter corner and a clean background so the bump is the subject, not a playground climbing frame.
How we choose on the day
Weather in the West Midlands changes quickly. A good outdoor plan has a covered backup — a porch, a tree line, or a return to the Dudley studio. We would rather move 200 metres for better light than stay in a “famous” spot that is blown out or packed with other photoshoots.
Permits are rarely needed for a small family or portrait session in a public park, but private venues and some event spaces are different. If your location is a hired hall, garden, or Birmingham venue, send the address ahead so we can check access and timing.
